The pattern on the wing of a moth evolves naturally from unseen conditions or forces in its environment.
It starts with the physical and emotional joy and play of simply making marks. So much of the decision making is done on a subconscious or instinctual level.
There are countless unseen currents and structures in the world around us that shape everything. Some of these get expressed in ways we can see, such as the designs on the wings of insects. I want to create a space for the unseen currents that move me to evolve naturally into visible conscious forms on my canvas.
I don’t follow a plan or vision for the work but it soon becomes clear to me where the next marks are to be made and I’m hungry to make them. Surprise and wonder at what appears drives this process and leads to all kinds of places I’ve never been before. Something ineffable and unnameable is revealed. Something mysterious but that also feels real and familiar. I feel the movement in my body, the colors in my mouth. Smells I’ve never experienced before and a kind of music. The images bridge a gap between the known and the intangible. I hope the finished work conveys to others some of the joy, curiosity and satisfaction I feel in making it.
