Rampart Walking

When I don't fly up here I walk. Lately (with a couple of broken wrists) I've been doing a lot of walking. I'll also add some pictures I've taken over the last couple years, but with this group of shots I'm mostly looking down. If you want to see what it's like looking up around here you can go to the HG index at the end of the third page.

This is a picture of the lake bed where we land. Before the lake goes down enough to expose flat hard mud we land here amidst the stumps. For an aerial view you can click

With every step you take there is something great to see here, like a storm of drying slime in a puddle.

After the water recedes this ocean of grass grows up. The ground underneath is soft like nerf which is nice because landings in this area can sometimes be rough in the turbulent air. It's downright luxuriant to lie around after flying.

Everything seems to stand alone in it's own space (perhaps due to the flooding) which seems to add an interesting presence to every bush and stump.

The biggest most noticeable inhabitants you meet while walking around on the lake bed are the stumps. These guys are incredible and you can see movement and things in them now that you never would have been able to see when this was a forest. I have this thing for the stumps and I've probably taken hundreds of pictures of them but I don't know if any of them convey the feeling I get from the place. I'll try and keep it to just a few pictures.

A little known fact about the stumps is that they walk around after dark :)

One of my favorites.
